Description
Orchard Cottage is a house that was converted into cottages in the early 19th century and is now under a single ownership again. The core of the building is a 17th-century timber-framed structure with three bays, featuring an early 19th-century extension to the southwest and a later 20th-century extension to the southeast and southwest, all constructed with matching materials.
The northwest front displays three bays of timber framing with red brick infill set on a stone plinth, supported by three slightly curved tension braces. It has two 19th-century casement windows. To the right, there is an early 19th-century addition made of stone rubble with brick dressings, which is two storeys high and includes a three-light casement window and a six-fielded panelled door with the top two panels glazed. A 20th-century brick lean-to is located at the entrance on the right. The roof is modern, hipped, and tiled, with one brick chimney stack.
The northeast front features two bays of 17th-century framing with stone infill to the north, a deep plinth, slightly jowled upright posts, curved tension braces, and a midrail with a metal clamp. The chimney is from the 17th century, but the exterior was updated in the early 19th century. There is a two-bay 20th-century addition to the south, built with matching materials and reusing old timbers. The southeast front has 20th-century windows.
Inside, there is a 17th-century cambered wooden bressumer above the fireplace, which has a lambs tongue stop, and exposed upright posts with a midrail. The staircase and doors are from the 20th century. The building is included for its group value.
