Description

The Parish Church of St Mary is a cruciform church with a south aisle and porch, and a west tower. The earliest parts of the building date back to the Norman period, with the north transept and arch of the south transept from that era. The nave arcade is Transitional-Norman, and the chancel was constructed in the 13th century. The tower is 15th century. In 1800, the south transept, south aisle, and porch were demolished and rebuilt on the original foundations by Sir Thomas Jackson between 1868 and 1869 as part of a wider restoration. This is a good-sized village church of medieval date, notable for being one of the few cruciform examples in Sussex.
