Description

The Maltings Barn is an early 19th-century malthouse and warehouse, later converted into apartments. It was originally the malthouse for the Monk Brewery and subsequently used as a store for the Gas Company. The building is constructed of flint with red brick quoins, banding, and dressings on a brick-dressed flint plinth. The second floor of the south range is slatehung. It has a pyramidally-hipped slate roof to the north end, where the malting was located, and a nipped ridge roof to the longer stowage range to the south. The building is two storeys high to the north (the malting) and three storeys high to the south (the stowage range). It has one window over two on the maltings and three windows on all floors of the stowage. A central pair of double doors are located on the second floor to the east, and a further pair of double doors are on the second floor to the east. Ground floor double doors are found to the north of the stowage range. A gabled hoist-house is situated at the north end on the second floor. A partial survival of the kiln remains, including a grating at the bottom on the north side. A building opposite, which is not listed, incorporates a datestone, reused from another building, bearing the date 1822, likely indicating the period of construction for further brewery buildings.
