Description

Highbuilding is a house, constructed in the late 17th and 18th centuries. The north end of the east front bears the date 1687 and the initials “W.S.”, believed to represent William Shotter, likely an ironmaster. The south end of the north east wing and the main part of the south west wing date from the 18th century. The house is built of hythe sandstone, with a tiled roof and a stringcourse. A stone doorway is topped with a round arch. The ground floor has two casement windows with stone mullions; the remaining windows are sash windows with glazing bars. The house is two storeys high with four windows facing east and three facing south. A modern tile-hung extension, featuring three windows, has been added to the west of the south west wing. The early 18th century staircase retains a dog-gate.
