Description
The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin is a Church of England building constructed between 1763 and 1765 by John Morris of Lewes, designed by Sir Thomas Robinson for Dr Richard Trevor, who was the Bishop of Durham from 1752 to 1771. The church features north, south, and east walls made of cobbles resting on an ashlar base. The west entrance front is adorned with knapped flints on an ashlar base, complemented by ashlar quoins and a pediment encased in a wooden surround with modillions. A stone cartouche displaying the arms of Dr Richard Trevor is located in the tympanum of the pediment, above which is an ashlar cupola that houses a bell. The large ashlar porch includes a pediment with a round-headed doorway, a semi-circular fanlight, and large double doors. Inside, the church retains its original fittings, including box-pews and a screen, although a gallery was added in 1841 and the chancel was repaired in 1894. The east window was designed by William Peckitt.
