Description

The Amberley War Memorial is a Cornish granite cross standing in the churchyard of the Parish Church of St Michael and All Angels. Erected in the aftermath of the Great War, specifically 1914-1918, it serves as a thankful memorial to those who fought and fell for their country and for right. The memorial takes the form of a roughly-hewn wheel-head cross, approximately 2 metres tall, rising from a plinth which stands on a stepped base. An inscription on the front of the cross shaft reads "LAUS DEO". The main dedicatory inscription on the front of the plinth commemorates the people of Amberley and Houghton and remembers the victorious issue of the Great War, acknowledging the devotion of those who fought and those who lost their lives. A small limestone stone, set at the front of the memorial and abutting the base, bears a Second World War inscription dedicated to those who fell in the conflict of 1939-1945.
