Description

Bartley Manor is a country house dating to the late 18th century, with extensions added in the early and late 19th centuries. The walls are stuccoed, with a plinth, a parapet featuring coping and a moulded cornice, and a moulded eaves band to the wings. The roof is hipped and slate-covered. The north-west front has a symmetrical design, with a three-storeyed main block and tall, single-storeyed wings projecting forward, displaying a 3.5.3 window arrangement. The windows are sash windows in exposed frames. The wings have blank panels above, except for two, with short upper panels creating a two-storey effect; the north side wing was subsequently raised to become a two-storeyed unit. The ground floor of the main block has three double French windows within reeded architraves, set within a stone-flagged verandah with a leaded flat and thin coupled columns above a cornice. The south-east (garden) elevation shows the south wing set back, featuring three French windows within a later verandah. The main block is three storeys and an attic, with three bays, and a late 19th-century central projecting unit. Some south-facing windows are now panelled, while those on the north side are coupled sashes beneath cambered openings. There is an additional wing on the north side, of a lower two storeys, which continues as a single-storeyed service block that surrounds a service yard. Within the yard is a curious rectangular structure built with thick cob walls and a thatched roof, topped by a small opening above a central doorway, presumed to be a game store.
