Description

Middle Gooseford Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates back to the 17th century, with possible earlier origins, and underwent significant renovation around 1920. The building is constructed from plastered granite rubble, possibly with cob, and features stone rubble stacks, two of which have granite ashlar chimney shafts, topped with a thatch roof.

The farmhouse has a four-room-and-through-passage layout, situated on a gentle hillside facing southeast. At the right (northeastern) end, there is a small unheated room, likely used as a dairy. The inner room contains an axial stack that backs onto the dairy, while the hall also has an axial stack that backs onto the passage. The service end room features a projecting gable-end stack. Although an internal inspection was not possible during the survey, it is suggested that the original structure may have been some form of open hall-house, though there is no evidence to confirm it was a Dartmoor longhouse.

The exterior showcases a regular but not symmetrical six-window front with casements from around 1920, except for the ground floor hall window, which is from the 19th century and has outer lights with rectangular panes of leaded glass. The passage front doorway, slightly left of center, features a 19th-century fielded panel door set behind a 20th-century gabled porch supported by rustic posts. The roof is gable-ended. The interior, which was not inspected, is reported by the owner to primarily reflect the renovations from circa 1920, with blocked fireplaces and no visible carpentry details, and some beams were removed during that renovation.
