Description
No. 7 Ford Street is a small house that has been adapted for use as a shop. It underwent remodelling or near-complete rebuilding in the early to mid 19th century, transforming an earlier structure. The exterior is stuccoed with joint lining to mimic ashlar, resting on a stone ground floor, while the first floor features timber studding. The roof is covered with asbestos slate and has gabled ends, with a steep pitch over the carriageway on the right side. The building has a double depth plan, and the internal layout of the ground floor has been altered.
The house is set back to the right, where a carriageway leads to a single room above. It is two storeys tall with a two-window range. On the ground floor, there are two late 19th century or early 20th century four-pane sash windows and an early to mid 19th century panelled door located to the left of centre. The first floor features two early to mid 19th century 16-pane sash windows in moulded exposed cases. The deeply set back carriageway on the right has a timber bressummer and 20th century boarded double doors, with a 19th century three-light casement window above that has small panes.
Inside, there is a chamfered half-beam in the right-hand wall of the main range and a central ceiling beam that is boxed. The roof structure is nailed and dates to the 19th century. While the building may contain some early fabric, its main significance lies in its largely unaltered 19th century exterior, which is part of an important group of early town houses that includes Nos. 1, 3, and 5 Ford Street and No. 17 The Square in Moretonhampstead.
