Description

Edgecombe is a cottage that has been converted into two flats, dating from the 16th or 17th century and modernized in the 20th century. It features plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with a stone rubble stack topped by 19th and 20th century brick, and one on top of a granite ashlar chimney shaft. The roof is thatched. The building has a two-room-and-through-passage plan, facing south and built across a hillslope. The right room, which was the former hall, has a large axial stack backing onto the former passage, while the left room has a gable-end stack. Although the roof was not inspected during the survey, it is believed that the house began in the 16th century as some type of open hall house, possibly heated by an open hearth fire.

The exterior features an irregular three-window front with 19th and 20th century casements. The oldest window is on the first floor to the right and contains rectangular panes of leaded glass, while the others have glazing bars. The former central front doorway is located behind a 20th century gabled porch, which now has a round-headed window with radial glazing bars in the outer arch. The doorways to both flats are situated in the rear wall, with the first-floor entrance accessed by a flight of 20th century steps. The roof is gable-ended on the left and runs continuously with the roof of the adjoining Rookwood Cottage on the right.

The interior has largely been altered by 19th and 20th century modernizations, with the ground floor carpentry plastered over and the fireplaces blocked by 20th century grates. The first floor was not inspected, but a 16th or 17th century roof structure is suspected, which may even be smoke-blackened. Edgecombe is part of an attractive group of listed buildings located to the east of the churchyard.
