Description

Springwood is a pair of cottages and a tearoom, originally part of a terrace of four cottages with an integral barn at one end, dating from the early 19th century. The building features granite rubble walls and has four brick lateral and gable chimney stacks at the rear, topped with a thatched roof that has gable ends.

The row of cottages includes a barn at the left-hand end. The two end cottages have gable end fireplaces, while the other two have rear lateral fireplaces. Each cottage is single depth, containing either one large heated room or one heated room and a smaller unheated room to one side. The structure is two storeys high with an asymmetrical five-window front.

On the first floor, all windows are early 20th-century metal frame three-light casements with small panes, except for the central window, which is a single light. The ground floor features, from right to left, a four-light metal frame casement, an early 20th-century plank door with a hood above, another similar window, and a part-glazed blockwood door with a single light metal frame window to its left. Next is another four-light window, followed by an early 20th-century plank door with a gabled porch hood above and an identical window to its left. There is also a stable door with a similar hood and a two-light metal frame casement, along with recent windows in a blocked doorway. To the left, there is a single light casement, a late 20th-century part-glazed door with a contemporary lean-to porch roof above, and to its left, another single light metal frame casement and a similar recent two-light window in a blocked doorway. The rear of the building has small irregular windows.

The interior has not been fully inspected, but one of the lateral fireplaces remains unblocked and features a plain wooden lintel.
