Description
The Calf House, located 8 metres northeast of West Underdown Farmhouse, is a building likely dating from the 18th century. It is constructed of cob on stone rubble footings, which include some large granite boulders, and features a corrugated iron roof that was formerly thatched. The building has a plan that includes a hayloft over the main structure, facing southeast, with the back of the building terraced into the slope.
On the front, towards the left, there is a doorway with a hayloft loading hatch directly above it. To the right, near the top, is a beebole. Additionally, there is another hayloft loading hatch at the rear, which is accessed directly from the terrace. The roof is hipped at both ends. Inside, the building displays plain carpentry details, including A-frame roof trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars.
