Description
The Village Cross, located in South Zeal, is a Grade II* listed structure dating from the 15th century. It is constructed from granite ashlar and features a complete late medieval cross, along with a socket stone and plinth. The plinth consists of three steps made from granite ashlar with bull-nosed steps. The socket stone is square with chamfered top edges. The cross itself stands approximately 2.5 meters high and is a plain cross originally carved from a single piece of granite, featuring chamfered head arms and a slightly tapering shaft with roll stops. The head of the cross is now a separate piece. This cross is an integral part of the South Zeal townscape and is particularly notable as one of the few medieval boroughs in Devon that retains a significant number of its late medieval houses.
