Description
The former infirmary at H M Prison Dartmoor dates from around 1806-9, with subsequent alterations and additions, including a former annexe. The building is constructed of granite rubble, with granite cills and lintels to the windows. The window openings contain multi-pane windows, some with moveable hopper sections, and later outer bars. The roof has been replaced with metal sheeting.
The original infirmary building has an H-shaped plan, with a long central range running north to south. A separate range stands to the west of the main infirmary block, also oriented north to south. Numerous later additions have been made to both parts of the complex. Certain recent additions to the south-west, south-east, and north of the western range are considered to be of limited architectural interest.
The main building is two storeys high. The west-facing elevation of the main range has eleven bays; original entrances were located to the north and south, but these are now concealed by later additions. Some window openings on this side have been altered, with some first-floor windows blocked and ground-floor openings lengthened. The south range of the main building remains largely intact internally, with eleven bays, matching fenestration, and a low central doorway. The upper part of the central bay has been altered, and a modern fire escape has been added. The eastern side of the former infirmary could not be inspected.
The single-storey range to the west of the main block, originally the site of the infirmary annexe, has been extensively altered and added to, and some of its original fabric may be incorporated. A long, lean-to section against the west wall largely dates from around 1900, but has undergone later rebuilding. A low, 20th-century addition is located against the north end.
The interiors were not inspected in 2015.
