Description

A former school and schoolhouse, dating to 1849 and built for W. P. Price. The building is constructed of English bond brickwork, with the house incorporating Sussex bond, and has slate roofs with bands of shaped slates. The house is largely symmetrical, with a 3-window front and 2 rooms in depth, arranged over two storeys. A gabled porch, set diagonally, features corner buttresses, a stone arch, a parapet gable with a cross-gablet apex, and lancet windows to the sides. The front door consists of three tall panels with glazed sections above. To either side of the porch is a plain plinth and a two-light wooden mullion and transom window with iron casements, a flat head, stone sill, and hoodmould. The first floor features a similar window in the centre, with a parapet gable and a stone cross finial above. The other first-floor windows are casements, and the eaves have scalloped boards and bargeboards. The roof also has crested ridge tiles. Brick gable chimneys are located on the right side, each with two octagonal flues and shaped heads, while a similar lateral chimney is on the left. The school section is located to the left and is of a T-plan, four bays, and a single storey. It features a plinth similar to the house and a two-light window on the right. A projecting entrance section has double half-glazed doors under a flat head, accessed by one stone step, with a stone hoodmould above. Separate stones display an inscription and a coat of arms. A parapet gable with a stone cross sits atop the apex, while a two-light stone window with plate tracery and a hoodmould is positioned to the left, set against a wall that breaks forward to accommodate a gable cross wing. The main section features scalloped eaves boards and bargeboards. The school was originally built as a 'British School'.
