Description

Upper Farmhouse, located in Clapton Village, dates to the 18th century, with additions from the 19th century. It adjoins Newbridge House. A datestone initialled “H.S. 1790” is on the right gable end. The farmhouse has a rectangular plan, comprising an 18th-century range set at a right angle to a 19th-century range. A small garage or outbuilding with a stone slate roof is attached to the left gable end of the 19th-century range, and a large, flat-roofed 20th-century glazed porch is on the 19th-century range; these are not considered particularly significant. The building is constructed of coursed, squared, and dressed limestone. The 18th-century garden front has an artificial stone slate roof, while the rest of the building has concrete tile and stone slate roofing. Ashlar stacks are present on the 18th-century range. The 18th-century range has a cellar with walk-in access from the sloping garden, and consists of two bays with a symmetrical garden front. This front features rusticated quoins. The windows are paired 20th-century hinged sashes within plain 18th-century architraves, each with a keystone. A round-headed surround with a keystone frames a central plank door leading to the cellar. A six-panel door is located in the right gable end, also with a plain architrave and a flat stone canopy supported by moulded stone brackets. The 19th-century range is two storeys and attic, with 2 and 3-light casements within segmented-headed surrounds featuring horizontal glazing bars. Sky-lights illuminate the attics. Inside the 18th-century range, round-headed panelled cupboard doors are flanked by fluted columns, and a 20th-century fireplace is in an 18th-century style. The cellar retains remains of a stone spiral staircase in one corner.
