Description
This barn, located approximately 5 metres south-east of Powlesland Farmhouse, dates back to the 16th century and was enlarged in the mid-17th century. It is constructed from plastered cob on stone rubble footings and has a corrugated iron roof, which was originally thatch. The barn is oriented on an east-west axis and features large opposing doorways leading to the threshing floor, which is situated north of the centre. Both doorways are fitted with late 19th to early 20th century plank doors. The roof is hipped to the south and gable-ended to the north. Inside, the barn is open from the ground to the roof. The northernmost truss is from the 16th century and is a face-pegged jointed cruck, while the other four trusses are mid-17th century A-frame trusses, characterized by pegged lap-jointed collars with dovetail-shaped halvings.
