Description

Luscombe Castle, built in 1800 by architect John Nash for banker Charles Hoare, features attached stables and other outbuildings, as well as the Chapel of St Alban, which was added by George Gilbert Scott in 1862. The house is constructed of stone in an asymmetrical Gothic style, characterized by a machicolated and castellated parapet and a central octagonal tower. It has clustered chimneystacks, and the first-floor windows have Gothic heads and label moulds. A tall porch with Gothic arches leads to rooms above with stained glass in the doorcase. There is also a large Gothic conservatory. Inside, the residence boasts a well staircase with a mahogany handrail and S-shaped iron balusters, along with an octagonal drawing room beneath the tower featuring a moulded cornice and fine marble fireplaces. The attached stables and outbuildings are two storeys high, made of painted brick with a slate roof, and their windows have hood mouldings. The Chapel of St Alban is a single-storey structure made of sandstone, with a vaulted roof displaying a chevron pattern in various colours of stone. It includes a four-bay nave and apse, stained glass from the period, original ironwork, and yew wood seats.
