Description

A terrace of twelve houses and a former hotel, now converted to flats, dating from the 1850s. The buildings are constructed of painted stucco with slate roofs and rendered stacks to the party walls, many of which are now truncated. They have double-depth plans.

The terrace is arranged over three storeys with attics and basements, and is stepped downhill. Each house originally had a two-window front, and the terrace incorporates wide bracketed eaves with decorative pendants. The attic windows are three-pane sashes with a moulded cornice at sill level. The lower floors feature six/six-pane sash windows with moulded architraves. Projecting porches are located to the left of each house, and are two storeys high. These porches have semicircular-arched stair windows above the doorways. The doorways themselves are segmental-arched with voussoirs transitioning into banded rustication, featuring half-glazed double doors with three panes per leaf. Above the doors are paired three-pane semicircular-arched windows, an impost band, and a modillion cornice below a panelled parapet. Variations exist between the houses; some have had an additional storey added to the porch, some retain original area railings, and some have lost original stucco detailing. The rear elevations have similar windows to the front, with a cornice over the second floor and sill bands below. House number 6 features French windows and a cast-iron balcony to the ground floor.

Internally, most of the houses have been altered, though number 6 retains the most original features. Number 10 has a mid-19th century moulded architrave to a 20th-century flush door, an open-well staircase with moulded balusters, and a late 19th-century half-glazed hall door with coloured glass in the corners. Numbers 7 to 11 retain more original features than the others.
