Description
Churchgate House is a small house, likely dating from the 18th century. It is constructed of white-painted stone rubble, with slate hanging on the first floor and a slate hipped roof featuring black-glazed ridge tiles. A rendered rear lateral stack has an old turned clay pot.
The house is laid out in an L-shape, originally comprising three rooms, possibly with a later one-room wing attached. The front doorway opens directly into a small room on the right (south) side of the house. A lateral stack is located at the rear of this room, and beyond it lies another room. The additional wing forms the overall L-shaped plan.
The west-facing front has an asymmetrical design, with one window to the right and one window on the inner side of the left wing. The windows are 20th-century casements with glazing bars and slate sills. The end wall of the wing is windowless, but the south end of the drain range includes a window on both the ground and first floors. The front doorway, situated in the angle of the front wing, has a late 19th or 20th-century plank door and an 18th or early 19th-century canopy supported by wooden shaped brackets and covered with slate. The interior was inaccessible during a survey in 1988. The group value stems from its contribution to the historic character of the Blackawton area.
