Description

Sutton Farmhouse is a large farmhouse with a core dating to the late 16th and early 17th centuries, significantly rebuilt in the 18th century and refurbished in the mid-19th century. The structure is built of plastered cob, rubble, and brick, and features rubble and brick stacks, one with Beer stone ashlar dressings and a 19th-century brick top. It originally comprised a 4-room main range facing south, with a central staircase plan, end stacks, and rear lateral stacks to the middle rooms.

A 17th-century block is located at right angles to the east end, and an 18th-century kitchen block extends at right angles to the west end. The building has a symmetrical 5-window front from the mid-19th century. The central entrance has a 6-panel door with glazed upper panels, panelled reveals, and a doorcase with panelled pilasters, sunken quatrefoils, and a moulded entablature. This is flanked by wide sashes with margin panes, and the remaining windows are narrower 12-pane sashes. A simple moulded eaves cornice runs along the top. The roof is hipped at each end, with a low roof extending to a gable at the west end stack. The projecting west end stack is constructed from exposed rock-faced snecked mudstone and volcanic stone, with Beer stone quoins. The rear lateral stack on the left side has a moulded brick cornice to the chimney shaft.

The rear east wing incorporates a late 16th/early 17th-century 4-light oak window with ovolo-moulded mullions, and a late 17th-century 2-light flat-faced mullion window. The interior mainly features mid-19th-century fittings, and the roofs of all three wings have mid-19th-century king post trusses. Surviving early features are likely present.
