Description

Numbers 56, 58 and 60 are two houses, one of which has been subdivided, along with an attached boundary wall. The buildings likely originated in the 17th century or earlier, with a rebuild in the 18th century. They are constructed of painted and stuccoed Flemish bond brick over a stone rubble base, with a slate roof and an axial stack.

Situated adjacent to the churchyard, the houses have garden fronts overlooking the river and are set back from the adjacent buildings on St Peter Street. They are built on a sloping site, incorporating basements at ground-floor level on the west side.

The external appearance is of three storeys and a basement, with two and three window garden fronts visible from across the river. The eaves are boxed, and most windows are sash windows, also boxed. The basement level has half-glazed garden doors and three-light windows. Ground-floor sashes include two windows with a segmental arched head to the left (north) side, and two 12-pane hornless timber sashes in No.56. A large, late 19th-century timber oriel window is present in No.56, featuring diagonal boarding below the sill and sash windows with small panes in the upper sashes and plate glass panes below. There are five 12-pane timber sashes to the first floor, and five similar sashes to the second floor, with one having been reglazed as a four-pane window.

The rear elevation of No.56, facing St Peter Street, features a pilastered doorcase with an old Sun Insurance sign and a narrow gabled wing. The rear elevation of the north house is gabled with deep verges on brackets, an archway through at basement level, and 12-pane and plate glass sashes. Steps lead up to the entrance, which has a 20th-century door with a small-pane overlight.

Interior inspection of No.56 revealed a staircase likely dating from the 1930s, positioned across the east wall. Photographs held by the owner show a mullioned window on the south end wall, uncovered during the stripping of render, suggesting a 17th-century origin.

A rendered brick boundary wall runs along the east and north sides of the north house, adjacent to the churchyard of St Peter. The wall is ramped between piers with sunk panels and is included as a subsidiary feature. No.56 was added to the listing on 20 June 1975.
