Description

Parkside Antiques, Merchant's Tea Rooms and Merchant's House comprise a former range of houses with a shop and office premises, dating back to the 16th century and remodelled in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of plastered stone with a slate roof and stone coping to the gable ends. It features corner pilasters, rusticated at the base and ornamented with a key pattern higher up. The building is two storeys in height, with two and three bays, and contains sash windows with glazing bars. Parkside Antiques and Merchant's Tea Rooms both have Victorian shopfronts, detailed with console brackets. Merchant's House has a flush panel door with a rectangular fanlight above. A stone wing extends to the rear, topped by a chimney stack at the gable end.

The interior of the building reveals timber cruck trusses. Merchant’s Tea Rooms features a heavy, moulded timber ceiling and a large, moulded stone Tudor arch fireplace on the rear wall, with a smaller moulded arch doorway subsequently inserted into the original arch. Merchant’s House contains a plaster ceiling dated circa 1600, divided into geometrically shaped fields adorned with small fleur-de-lis. Within the same room is a painted overmantle, also circa 1600, depicting an arcade containing four female figures representing experience, good reputation, bad reputation, and truth. There is a passageway with early 17th-century panelling.
