Description

The Mohuns Ottery Gatehouse and the front garden walls, located approximately 5 metres south of Mohuns Ottery Farmhouse, are the ruins of a gatehouse and adjoining garden walls. The gatehouse dates from the mid 16th century and was built by Sir Peter Carew, while the walls are likely from the mid 19th century, contemporary with the 1868 rebuild of the farmhouse.

Constructed from local stone and flint rubble, the gatehouse features Beerstone ashlar dressings and detail. Only the lower stage remains of what was likely a 2 or 3-storey rectangular building aligned on a north-south axis. Each end of the gatehouse has carriageway arches that are 4-centred with moulded surrounds. The spandrels are intricately carved with heraldic devices, Renaissance-style foliage, and putti, along with hoodmoulds. The front doorway is flanked by late 19th-century cream-coloured brick buttresses. The side walls are blind, although there is evidence of a possible blocked doorway on the west side. A mass of masonry against the east wall may indicate the presence of a stair. The gatehouse currently has no roof.

The path leading from the gatehouse to the farmhouse is bordered by mid 19th-century low stone rubble walls, and there is a mounting block on the outside of the west wall. Similar garden boundary walls extend from each side of the front of the gatehouse. This structure is believed to have been built by Sir Peter Carew, who lived from 1512 to 1575 and died on the Mary Rose.
