Description

The K6 telephone kiosk is a standardised design from the 20th century, constructed of cast iron and painted red overall with long horizontal glazing in the door and sides. The crowns on the top panels are applied, not perforated. Rectangular white display signs read "TELEPHONE" beneath the shallow-curved roof. Modern internal equipment is present. The kiosk is intact and in fair condition, although the paint is flaking in places.

The kiosk is situated in a purpose-built nook in front of the telephone exchange, positioned at a crossroads in the southern part of the village. Nearby are a small, unlisted church to the south, and Riverdale Cottage (Grade II) approximately 20 metres to the east, along with another listed cottage immediately to the east ('Cottage to the South of Riverdale Cottage'). The White Cottage (Grade II) stands approximately 50 metres to the south east of the kiosk on the opposite side of the road.

The K6 telephone kiosk, designed by Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 for the General Post Office to commemorate King George V's Silver Jubilee, represents a milestone in 20th-century industrial design. It developed from Scott’s earlier K2 design of 1924, offering a more streamlined, compact, and cost-effective mass production version. The K6 is a well-represented example of this important design, with over 70,000 produced before many were replaced in the 1960s. Its visual relationship with nearby listed buildings and its idyllic setting contribute to its significance.
