Description

Bentham House is a house dating from approximately 1850 to 1852. Constructed from ashlar limestone with a stone slate roof, it is two storeys and has attics. The architectural style is a robust early Victorian Gothic. The building originally had four bays, though the plan has been altered. The entrance is through a two-storey gabled porch located in the second bay, featuring a two-centred moulded arch with a hood, a canted oriel above, and pointed transomed lights. The first and fourth bays also have two-storey canted projections, incorporating blind quatrefoils in the spandrels and pierced parapets. Stone mullioned and transomed windows are present throughout. Dormers are set into bays 1, 3, and 4, each gabled with carved bargeboards. Stone chimneys have round shafts. A one-storey, two-bay billiards room was added around 1898 to the left side of the house. Bentham House was built for William James Sadler on land owned by the Shaftesbury Estate.
