Description

The building at 32 West Street dates to circa 1820. It is composed of a three-story section on the left and a two-story section on the right, both constructed of painted stucco and framed by rusticated quoins. The roof is slate with flat eaves, and hipped over the left-hand portion. The right-hand section features four bays of glazing bar sash windows, each with moulded architraves and Venetian shutters. A six-panelled front door, with reeded lower panels, is located on the left; it is accompanied by a decorative wrought-iron knocker depicting two dolphins and a ball, a plain arched fanlight, and panelled reveals with Venetian shutters. The doorcase consists of panelled pilasters, a plain necking, a broken dentil cornice, and an open pediment. The left-hand section has two bays with similar window treatment, with the ground floor window on the left being blind. Trefoil-headed area railings with pointed dog-rails are present, along with scrolls to the cast-iron gatepiers and gates. Inside, the front passage and staircase hall have a panelled dado with paired cusped Gothic blind arch panels, with a miniature repetition of this design in a cupboard beneath the stairs. Two rooms on the ground floor of the right-hand section incorporate fragments of a Jacobean oak four-poster bed from Island House, now adapted into dresser-style fireplaces and shelving.
