Description

The Old Court House is an early 16th-century house located on Castle Combe Market Place. Constructed of rubble stone and timber frame, it has a stone tile roof and a stack at the south end. The building is two stories with a two-window front. The first floor features a projecting timber frame with four symmetrically arranged curved tension braces, a moulded bressumer, and a hollow-moulded wall plate. The windows on the first floor are two-light wooden leaded designs: one is a casement pair, and the other is a sash window. The ground floor includes a door, a small wood-leaded sash window, and an early 18th-century recessed stone mullion window with two lights and leaded glass. Inside, the house retains heavy timbers. A fine moulded Tudor-arched stone fireplace is on the south side, above which is a painted depiction of the Royal arms, likely of Henry VIII.
