Description

The Court House is a mansion house that dates from the 16th century, with additions from the 18th century and later. The original core structure is made of flint and chalkstone, while later sections feature diaper brickwork. The building has tiled roofs and consists of two storeys, a cellar, and attics, with two widths. The east facade has been rendered and features an approximately symmetrical elevation from the 18th century. It includes a gable with a raised verge and hollow chamfered windows with arched heads and label moulding, as well as a north ground floor window with chamfered mullions.

A parallel east block, which is faintly dressed in brick, has been added and consists of two storeys with four bays and one room thick. It features 12-pane sash windows with keystones in flat arches, a plat band, and rendered raised quoins, with a door located in the second bay. The building has brick dentilled eaves and a hipped tiled roof. A similar parallel extension has been added to the west gable at the north end, also constructed of diaper brick with a tiled roof, but rendered on the north side. Inside, there are panelled shutters. The Court House is reputedly associated with the Goddard manor house at Upham and served as a bell foundry from 1694 to the mid-18th century, linked to the families of Corr, Starre, and Read.
