Description

The Village Hall, which was formerly a school, dates back to the 1870s and is possibly designed by James Brooks, who also created the local church and vicarage. The building is constructed from coursed limestone rubble and features a stone tile roof with stone tile-hung gable ends and shaped rafter ends visible beneath the eaves. It has a T-shaped plan with two school rooms in the main west range and lavatories in the east range, along with a narrow single-storey outhouse to the southwest.

The exterior is single-storey, with the east front showcasing a projecting gable-ended wing on the right that includes a large casement window with glazing bars set in a segmental arch opening, complete with a stone cill. To the left, there is a shouldered arch doorway with a plank door featuring wrought-iron strap hinges. The main range to the left has a 4-light mullion-transom window with a high stone cill. Similar windows are found in the north and south gable ends, both positioned under stone tile-hung gable apexes. The rear west side includes a tall lateral stack on the right, next to a doorway and a range of outhouses in a long, low, and narrow wing topped with a monpitch slate roof.

Inside, the two school rooms are separated by a glazed timber screen. The rooms have ceilings, but the collars and principals of the trusses are exposed. There are two fireplaces with simple stone chimneypieces, one featuring a corbelled cill. Additionally, there is a set of metal wall ventilators with control knobs shaped like a small clenched fist holding a scroll. This building is a largely complete example of a parish school and contains several interesting details, possibly reflecting the work of the notable Victorian architect, James Brooks.
