Description

Wroughton House is an early 18th-century "quality" house of an "L" shaped plan when viewed from the North. It has two and a half storeys and a cellar. The exterior is rendered with pebbledash over a stone plinth, with ashlar quoins. A moulded string runs above the ground floor, and a moulded wooden eaves cornice sits below the flipped stone tile roof. There are two brick chimneys with stone dressings, and two others. The north front has five windows to the north wing and six to the west wing, all featuring glazing bar sashes in moulded surrounds, with two hipped dormers to each wing. A Tuscan porch with a blocking course projects to the right of the centre, leading to a half-glazed door. A modern door with intersecting glazing in a fanlight sits to the left, alongside a small port-hole window. An oriel window features on the gable end of the north wing. The west and south fronts each have five windows, the south front featuring an open pedimented doorcase. Inside, the layout is based on a cross passage. A contemporary, heavy oak staircase has turned balusters and a moulded handrail, and there is intersecting glazing to the fanlight of a glazed screen in the cross passage.
