Description
Nos. 10-19 Caroline Place, including the forecourt walls and railings, form one of two planned terraces built around 1835. Later rear wings were added to the main structure. The front portion of No. 10 was rebuilt in 1948 following bomb damage during the Second World War and was subsequently subdivided into two flats before being returned to single occupancy in 2015.
The majority of the terrace is constructed of brick and rubble-stone with stucco detailing, except for No. 16, which has roughcast render. The roofs are dry slate with deep eaves, featuring brick stacks and clay pots at the end of each house, with further chimneys within the rear wings. No. 10 is built of brick, concrete block, and rubble-stone. The terrace follows a double-depth plan with rear wings, oriented on an east-to-west axis.
The buildings are two storeys and attic in height, with each house featuring three bays. Nos. 11-16 have porches on the left-hand side, while Nos. 17 and 18 have porches on the right. No. 19 incorporates a flat-roofed porch on its right-hand return. Most windows are replacements, although some original hornless sashes survive; later replacements include horned sashes from the late 19th century, and modern timber or uPVC windows. The stucco detailing comprises a rusticated ground floor, a plat band, and corner pilasters. Rear wings of varying sizes extend to the north of each house. The roofs are hipped at either end of the terrace, and most houses have front and rear roof dormers in various styles.
The rebuilt front section of No. 10, dating to 1948, incorporates Portland-cement foundations and 2-inch cavity brick walls, with matching stucco detailing including a rusticated ground floor, plat band, and corner pilaster. The entrance has an arched stucco surround located on the left-hand return, and the windows are early 21st-century timber sashes. The rear wing is rubble-stone at the lower-ground floor, with concrete block incorporated into the upper floors, and also includes a former brick privy and store attached to the rear. The roofs are slate.
While the interiors of Nos. 11-19 were not inspected, they are expected to retain features of interest. The front of No. 10 dates entirely to the 1948 rebuild or later, and the roof structure above the front range is of mid-20th century construction. The rear wing retains some 19th-century features, including a rear stair and a lower-ground floor with a back-to-back range and a flagstone floor. The roof above the rear wing appears to be of mid-20th century construction, also incorporating fragments of earlier, heavily-charred beams that may be related to the bomb damage. Internal building fabric within No. 10 dating to the 1948 rebuild and later is not considered to be of special architectural or historic interest, in accordance with planning legislation.
The forecourt in front of the terrace is defined by a low coped-rubble wall topped with wrought-iron railings, which were reinstated between 2003 and 2006.
