Description

This is a K6 telephone kiosk designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and produced by various contractors. The kiosk is a standardised design constructed of cast iron, painted red with long horizontal glazing in the door and sides. The crowns on the top panels are applied, rather than perforated. There are rectangular white display signs reading "TELEPHONE" beneath the shallow curved roof. Modern internal equipment has been installed.

The kiosk occupies a central position in the village of Iwerne Minster, within the Conservation Area. It has a strong visual relationship with several listed buildings, including Sunnyside and Brekan Cottage (both Grade II listed), and a line of sight to the former Baptist Chapel to the north, which is also Grade II listed.

The K6 telephone kiosk is considered a key example of 20th century industrial design. It was designed in 1935 by Giles Gilbert Scott for the General Post Office to commemorate King George V's Silver Jubilee, evolving from his earlier, highly successful K2 telephone kiosk design of 1924, which drew inspiration from Neo-classical architecture. The K6 was streamlined, more compact, and more cost-effective to mass produce. Over 70,000 K6 kiosks were eventually made before being largely replaced in the 1960s by simpler designs, although many remain as an iconic feature of the British landscape.

It is designated at Grade II for being an iconic example of industrial design demonstrating Scott’s adaptation of neoclassical forms for a modern technological function, and for being a good example of the type, situated within the Iwerne Minster Conservation Area, and relating visually to nearby listed buildings.
