Description
The Collingwood Battalion War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was erected in 1919. It is made of polished Peterhead granite and has a square plan, standing within a rectangular area of flagstones.
The memorial features a simple obelisk of polished red granite, which is approximately 2.7 meters high and sits on a plinth with a two-stepped base. It is positioned on a raised paved and brick base, with a wider paved area that is enclosed on three sides by metal railings and has a post and chain fence at the front.
On the west face of the plinth, there is a dedication in raised lead lettering that reads: "IN MEMORY OF/ THE COMMANDING OFFICER/ OFFICERS AND MEN/ OF THE COLLINGWOOD BATTN/ ROYAL NAVAL DIVISION/ WHO FELL IN ACTION IN GALLIPOLI,/ ON 4TH JUNE 1915, WHEN THE/ BATTN. WAS PRACTICALLY DESTROYED." Additionally, the rear (east) side of the plinth features another leaded inscription that states: "THE COLLINGWOOD BATTALION COMPLETED/ ITS TRAINING/ ON THESE DOWNS./ THIS MEMORIAL IS ERECTED/ BY THE SURVIVORS."
