Description

The Church of St Mary is a parish church located in West Stour, with origins dating back to the 13th century for the chancel, which has undergone alterations in the 18th century. The nave and the south tower and porch were added in 1840. The building is constructed from squared, coursed rubble with ashlar dressings. The nave roof is slated and features stone copings, while the chancel roof is also stone slated with stone copings.

On the south chancel, there is a 14th-century two-centred window with cusped Y-tracery of two lights to the left, and a trefoiled lancet to the right. Between these is a door with a chamfered two-centred head. The north side has two plain lancets, and the east window, dating from the 18th century, consists of three lights with coarse panelled tracery beneath a square head with a returned label. The nave windows are from the 19th century and are lancets.

The tower is a single stage and embattled, featuring lancet bell openings with pierced iron panels. The south porch has a chamfered two-centred archway with a returned label.

Inside, there is a two-centred, chamfered chancel arch with continuous jambs, and a four-centred section with a panelled ceiling that has moulded ribs and wall plates. The chancel features a barrel vault with moulded ribs. A 19th-century west gallery includes cusped, carved panelling. The church also houses a 13th-century font with an octagonal bowl on a round pier supported by subsidiary shafts, a trefoiled piscina in the chancel, a 17th-century panelled pulpit with a guilloche frieze, and 16th-century carved panelling that has been reset in the gallery and vesting cubicle. The floorslab is from the 18th century, while other features are primarily from the 19th century.
