Description
The Arsenic Calciner is a ruin located in Chacewater, dating from around 1908. It features Killas rubble with granite quoins and bonding stones, as well as St Day brick arches, a vault, and the upper stage of a chimney. The structure is square in plan and includes a main calciner furnace to the east, which is linked to two rectangular chambers. These chambers connect to a series of about 40 condensing chambers through a baffled flue system that leads to a circular chimney to the west.
The main calciner furnace has a brick vault running from east to west on the ground floor, with a brick arch on the south side and a small angled opening leading to a brick domed vault. There are two similar angled openings with iron door frames on the north side, along with a central hearth. The entire structure is reinforced with iron tie rods and plates.
The adjoining chamber to the west features a series of square holes leading to the next chamber, which serves as a flue and shows evidence of a floor structure above. There is a narrow flue leading to another rectangular chamber, which may contain a further furnace at the south end and an entrance from the north. The condensing chamber system is largely in ruins, with the St Day brick vaults removed; only the stone baffle walls and the continuous rear wall remain. The tapered chimney is intact, featuring a stone rubble lower stage, a corbelled brick collar, and a brick collar cornice at the upper stage. This site is recognized as the best surviving example of an arsenic processing system.
