Description

Roaring Stile is a cottage dating from around the mid-18th century, with a 20th-century extension that mirrors the original facade. The lower walls are constructed of whitewashed stone rubble, while the upper walls are of cob, with the extension being stuccoed. The entire building is covered by a combed wheat-reed thatched roof with gabled ends, and brick stacks are located at each gable. Originally a two-cell, single-room-deep dwelling, it has undergone alterations. The cottage now presents as an almost symmetrical two-window front. The ground floor entrance has been relocated to the left, featuring a 20th-century glazed door with glazing bars. There are two two-light casements with glazing bars on the ground and first floors. The extension incorporates three-light casements on the ground floor and two-light casements above, all with glazing bars. A 20th-century lean-to extension adjoins the left-hand gable end. A timber lintel with a slight chamfer is positioned over the fireplace at the right-hand gable end. Reference is made to "The Cornishman’s House" by V.M. and F.J. Chesher, published in 1968.
