Numbers 36 and 38 and Attached Front Garden Walls and Piers

A pair of attached houses, built around 1896 by Henry Dare Bryan. The houses are constructed of snecked Lias rubble with limestone dressings, with a tile-hung second floor, brick ridge and diagonally-set gable stacks, and a concrete tile hip and gable roof. They are designed according to a double-depth plan and are in the Queen Anne style. The houses are three storeys high, with a two-window front. They present a symmetrical appearance, with entrances located on the sides. Projecting outer gables are linked by an area across the ground floor, which features stone-framed windows. The carved doorcases are flanked by terms and include a mullion overlight and a swan's neck pediment, leading to a ridged, two-leaf elliptical-arched door. Ground-floor windows have mullions and transoms with leaded casements. First-floor windows have glazing bars above the transoms, and second-floor casements slightly project on small brackets. The gables have two ground-floor cross windows separated by a raking buttress supporting a three-light oriel. Above this is an overhanging second floor on brackets with a three-light window, beneath a jettied half-timbered gable apex. Between these features are shallow ground-floor three-light bows set between angled buttresses, with a parapet and cartouche panels, as well as three-light first-floor windows and three-light eaves dormers with tile-hung tympana. The rear elevation is flat, with semicircular-arched stair lights and a single-storey service block. The interior has not been inspected. There are attached front garden walls and piers with ball finials. The design is strongly influenced by Norman Shaw's Bedford Park, dating from 1881.
