Description
Numbers 29 to 40 form a terrace of eleven late Georgian houses begun in 1791, possibly designed by William Paty, with work initially halted in 1793 and completed in 1827. The houses are built of limestone ashlar to the front, with brick and render to the rear. They have slate and pantile mansard half hipped roofs and a double-depth plan.
Each house has three storeys, an attic, and a basement, arranged in a three-window range. The terrace has a concave form, with an ashlar front marked by giant pilasters extending through a plat band to a modillion cornice and parapet. The ground floor is banded. Number 40 projects forward. The windows are mostly 6/9-pane sash windows on the first floor, and 6/6-pane sashes elsewhere, with dormers above.
A projecting, vaulted basement forms a full-width terrace with a rusticated front featuring large semicircular arches and a balustrade. Some tented first-floor balconies have oval wrought-iron railings. The rear elevations have doorways with Ionic pilasters, entablatures, cornices, semicircular arches with fanlights, and six-panel doors with flush lower panels and upper raised panels with cut-out corners; the entrance to number 38 is blocked. Two-storey porches are present at numbers 31 and 32, and numbers 33 to 39, bowed with rusticated ground floors at numbers 34 and 39. Number 40 has a larger, projecting doorway with a central semicircular-arched stair window with triple 2/6/6-pane sashes, and a two-storey left-hand extension with a modillion cornice.
The interior features an entrance hall, a dogleg staircase with stick balusters, column newels, a ramped rail, and a curtail. Ground-floor rooms are interconnected by folding doors, and have full width fronts, reeded architraves to six-panel doors and panelled shutters.
Attached to the rear is a wrought-iron railing enclosing a basement area, with urn finials and overthrow arches to numbers 30 and 40. A roughly 50-metre long rubble wall extends from number 40, adjacent to Clifton Vale. The terrace was originally planned as part of a longer development including numbers 1 to 23, and a right of way was created between the two sections during a period when the development was paused.
