Description

The Church of St Peter is a parish church dating to the late 12th century. The chancel was altered in the early 14th century, with further changes made in the late 15th century to the nave and south chapel. The church was restored in 1885, and a new south porch was added at that time. It comprises a nave, south chapel, south porch, central tower, and chancel.

The church is constructed of coursed, squared freestone and rubble, with freestone dressings, and has a slate roof over the nave and a lead roof over the chancel. The central tower has three stages built on a plinth, with thin clasping buttresses to the upper two stages, and an embattled parapet with pinnacles. A single-light opening with a cusped head is found on the second stage, and a two-light bell-chamber opening with pierced lozenge panels is at the top. A square projecting stairtower is located at the north-east of the first stage.

The nave has a two-light clerestory window on the south side with four-centred heads, and a three-light 19th-century mullion and transom window in a late Perpendicular style to the west. There are two three-light late Perpendicular style north windows with four-centred heads. Buttresses with offsets are located between the windows, and a blocked north door sits within a chamfered and four-centre headed surround.

The south chapel is rubble-built with a flat roof concealed behind an ashlar embattled parapet, angle buttresses with offsets, and a four-light window with cinquefoil heads beneath a square dripmould having lozenge stops.

The chancel features a corbel table with carved human and beasts' heads. It has a two-light south window with trefoil heads and a quatrefoil light above, and a three-light east window of reticulated tracery. A continuous string course rises to form angle buttresses over the windows. The chancel east end has angle buttresses rising to form pinnacles and an embattled gable.

The south porch is constructed of ashlar with an embattled parapet and a moulded, pointed doorway.

Inside the south chapel, a triple chamfered arch leads from the nave. The windows have panelled reveals, and a squint to the porch is formed of two ogival triangles. A piscina is ogee-headed. The tower arches to the nave and chancel have attached half-columns with scalloped capitals; decorative scallops are present on the north-west, and a monster’s face on the north-east. The arches above are later, double-chamfered and pointed. A blank arcade decorated with three-dimensional carving of two rows of zig-zag with beading between is on the north side of the tower. The arcade has columns with cushion, scalloped, and carved head capitals, and continues behind the north-west pier of the tower. The chancel has a roll moulded inner moulding to the windows and a scalloped capital at the north-west. On the east face of the tower arch is a medieval statue, possibly of the infant Christ or from a tomb. Stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops are also present.
