Description

Oakfield is a house, dating to 1857 and now operating as a nursing home. The house is constructed of limestone ashlar with a hipped slate roof, featuring wide bracketed eaves and elaborately moulded stacks. The design is irregular, with a single-storey rear wing extending to the left of the main entrance.

The two-storey house has a lower ground floor. It features plate-glass sash windows; those on the ground floor have semicircular arches and keystones, rising to a narrow platband above the first floor. The south-facing garden front incorporates a full-height canted bay with a hipped roof, positioned to the right of centre, and a rectangular gabled bay to the left, with a tripartite window on the first floor and paired windows on the ground floor. The gable bargeboard forms an open pediment above a carved coat of arms and the date. A slightly projecting rear wing includes a single-storey entrance block set in an angle, with balustraded parapets above the steps leading to a semicircular arched doorway, located on the left return. The recessed entrance door has two rows of three vertical panels, with a window to the right and one to the front. Chimneystacks are prominent on both the main block and the wing. The interior has not been inspected.

The design is Italianate, displaying the influence of Goodridge in its massing, fenestration and detailing, particularly the deep eaves.
