Description

This is a former school, now converted into apartments, built in 1821 and enlarged in 1877 and 1920, with further additions in the 20th century. The front and left side are faced with limestone ashlar, while the right side is constructed of rubble to ground and first floor level, with ashlar above. It has a Welsh slate roof with coped verges and an ashlar stack at the right end.

The building is three storeys high, with a two-bay, four-window front. The first floor features four/two-paned sash windows with horns, set in plain reveals and with stone sills and recessed panels below. To the right are three similar windows, the central one being taller and featuring bordered glazing in the upper sash. The second floor has groups of three 20th-century timber casements with continuous stone sills. The ground floor has groups of three four/four-paned sash windows with horns and segmental lintels, and stone sills. A half-glazed door has been inserted where a window formerly stood to the left. The ground floor forms a plinth, and an impost band above the first-floor windows creates flat surrounds with keystones to the window heads. Incised lettering on the lintel of the ground-floor window to the left group reads 'THE BERNARD INFANTS SCHOOL'. The left side of the building has three grouped windows to the ground floor – due to the sloping ground, these are level with the first floor at the front – and a pair of small 20th-century windows to the first floor. A plinth and impost band continue from the front, and the impost band aligns with No. 7 Harley Street.

The interior has not been inspected. This school was built on land conveyed in 1790 and remained undeveloped until 1817, when it was purpose-built as a school by Mrs Ann Chapman. This pre-dates the main period of late Georgian school construction.
