Description

No. 1 Park Place is a house built around 1805, which was repaired and restored in 1996. It is possibly designed by John Pinch the Elder. The house is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a pantile roof, although this is not immediately visible from the street.

The building has a narrow double-depth plan with the entrance located on the left side. It is similar to No. 2 Park Place but has floors at different levels, likely a deliberate choice to connect with the existing terrace houses of No. 10 Park Street and No. 1 Cavendish Place, which were also designed by John Pinch the Elder.

The exterior consists of three storeys and a full-height attic storey. The ground floor features a six-over-six sash window and a six-panel door with a rectangular light above. There is a platband at the first-floor level that continues with No. 2. The first floor has a tripartite window with a dropped sill, a plain sash flanked by two two-over-two sashes, and a wrought iron balconette. The second floor has a similar tripartite sash window with six-over-six sashes flanked by two two-over-two sashes, also with a wrought iron balconette. The cornice is smaller than that of No. 2 but matches the cornice of No. 1 Cavendish Place. The full attic storey has a window similar to the second floor, and the cornice is continuous with that of No. 10 Park Street. The roof is not visible except from a distance, but it features a tall ashlar stack with weathering to the right, complete with pots. The rear elevation has not been seen.

The house was first mentioned in the rate books in 1805 and is believed to have been built by carpenter Edmund Gunning.
