Description

Nos. 1, 2, and 3 Devonshire Place comprise a group of three terrace houses dating to the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with a later 19th-century addition. The houses are constructed of painted limestone ashlar with slate or concrete tile roofs.

Each house has three storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a single window front. No. 1 has a concrete tile roof with a raking dormer and a tripartite eight:twelve:eight-pane sash window above a plain Venetian window. The ground floor features a pair of large plain sash windows and a panelled door framed by reeded pilasters and a cornice, raised on three steps. To the left is an area with steps leading to a basement door, alongside paired replacement sash windows. A late 19th-century gabled two-storey house is attached to the left. No. 2 has a dormer and a paired sash window above a plain tripartite sash on the first floor. A distinctive feature is the three deep casement doors beneath a tented veranda roof supported by four standards, accompanied by original reticulated railings and a balcony slab on brackets. The ground floor has paired plain sash windows and a panelled door with reeded pilasters. No. 3 features paired sash-raking dormers over paired sash windows on each floor, along with a square porch and a door with a narrow transom light to the right, and a glazed lean-to above a basement window. The return gable on the right has a small sash window at first and second floor levels, which has been rendered. A single-storey, gabled workshop with high strip glazing and garage doors is attached. Rear additions are also present. The party walls are coped and feature deep ashlar stacks.

The interior of No. 2 was partially inspected by Bath Council in 1986 and contains a very good Regency fireplace on the first floor, featuring a Regency grate and brass enrichment.

The centre house is flanked by walls with swept coping leading to a square rusticated pier with a square urn on the left, and a round-headed pier on the right. Between these piers are gate and spearhead railings, including dog-bars, set against an ashlar curb wall.
