Description
Hurstpierpoint College, founded in 1849 by Nathanial Woodard, is located in Hurstpierpoint. Initially established in The Mansion House, it moved to its permanent buildings in 1853. The buildings, designed by R.C. Carpenter and completed by his partner William Slater and son R.H. Carpenter, are in the Gothic style and constructed from flints with tiled roofs. The college features two quadrangles, with the southern one open on the south side and narrow pointed or trefoil-headed windows. The chapel and hall form the north side of the north quadrangle. The chapel, located at the east end, has seven bays, four of which project beyond the east side of the quadrangle. It has a pointed window of Decorated type flanked by buttresses, and at the west end, there are short transepts that create an ante-chapel, lit by a larger similar window, with a tower added in 1929. The interior includes very beautiful stalls. To the west, a small covered passage, also added in 1929, connects the chapel to the hall, which is on the first floor with the dining room beneath it. The hall features five bays flanked by buttresses, with the first-floor windows having flatter pointed heads, while the ground floor windows consist of pairs of trefoil-headed lancets.
