Description

This is a 15th-century timber-framed building, originally constructed as a residence for the Wardens of the Bridge, who were monks of Sele Priory at Upper Beeding. It appears to be the sole surviving wing of what was likely a courtyard house. The building’s north and east sides feature a close-studded first floor with oversailing ends to the floor joists, supported by a bressumer and brackets. The ground floor of the east front was rebuilt using brick and flints. The original infilling was plaster. The roof is hipped and covered with Horsham slate. Modern windows occupy the ground floor. The original east-front first-floor windows are casement types, including a projecting window with two tiers of three lights, and another with two tiers of five lights, both featuring wooden mullions, transoms, and diamond-shaped leaded panes. The house is two storeys high with an attic, and has four windows and three hipped dormers to the east, and two windows and one dormer to the north. A 19th-century flint addition extends to the west, with a later brick addition beyond. The interior contains a fine staircase, ornate chimney pieces, and a room with painted panelled walls. A crested wrought iron gate provides access to the garden, located to the north-east of the house.
