Description

The Rusper War Memorial is located in the churchyard of St Mary Magdalene Church, which is a Grade I listed building, and it faces the road. This memorial features an obelisk that stands on a square plinth, all of which is set on a three-stepped octagonal base.

The granite used for the memorial has a rough finish, and the plinth has a plain arched cartouche of polished stone on each side. These panels display incised inscriptions and the names of those who fell. The front face of the plinth is decorated with a raised carving of a wreath that has a cross at its center. Below this carving is the inscription: IN / THANKFUL REMEMBRANCE / OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN / THE GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1919.

On another side of the plinth, following the list of names from the First World War, the years 1939 – 1945 are inscribed, along with the names of those who fell in the Second World War.
