Description
The Selsey War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was erected in 1920. It is made of Portland stone and sandstone and is positioned along the pathway leading to the south porch of the Church of St Peter, integrated into the boundary wall of the churchyard.
The memorial features a Celtic wheel cross on a slender shaft, which is decorated with Celtic knot-work carving. It stands on a low plinth with a three-stepped base, resting on a square rough-hewn pedestal. The front face of the pedestal has an inscription that reads, "1914 TO THE GLORY OF GOD 1919/ AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF SELSEY WHO FELL IN THE/ GREAT WAR," followed by the names of 57 individuals. Below this original panel, the date 1953 and one additional name from the Korean War are also inscribed.
Flanking the cross are two inward curving quadrant rubble walls, which have ashlar copings and quoins. The copings on each side are inscribed with the dates 1939 - 1945, and there are 48 names listed on stone plaques within the walls. The semi-circular area enclosed by these walls features block paving and includes a metal bar for supporting wreaths.
