Description

The K6 telephone kiosk is a standardised design from 1935, constructed of cast iron and painted red with long horizontal glazing in the door and sides. The crowns on the top panels are applied, not perforated, and rectangular white display signs read “TELEPHONE” beneath the shallow curved roof. The interior contains modernised equipment and the kiosk retains glass windows. Although generally in good condition, the red paint is fading in places.

Designed by Giles Gilbert Scott for the General Post Office to commemorate King George V's Silver Jubilee, the K6 was developed from his earlier K2 design of 1924, which drew inspiration from Neo-classical architecture. The K6 was more streamlined, compact, and cost-effective to mass produce, and over 70,000 were eventually made.

The kiosk is situated in the centre of the village, approximately 15 metres southwest of Ye Olde Sun Inn. It has a strong visual relationship with several other listed buildings nearby: Periwinkle Cottage, The White House, and Church House. The K6 telephone kiosk is designated at Grade II for its visual relationship with these other buildings and as an iconic example of industrial design, demonstrating Giles Gilbert Scott’s adaptation of Neoclassical forms for modern technology.
