Description
Sorrell House is a private residence built in 1960 by architects Peter Foggo and David Thomas for George Scott, with Mr. Jones as the contractor. The house was extended in 1965 by the same architects. It features a timber construction with a flat roof, raised on a platform that is one storey high, allowing for free space underneath and placing the living areas above ground level.
The main elevation consists of four bays supported by a grid of timber posts. The timbers are simply joined and designed to oversail the joints, highlighting the horizontal elements. The doors and windows are framed in a straightforward manner and are flush with the building's exterior, reflecting Mr. Jones's nautical background. An additional left-hand bay matches the original style. A timber open stair leads to an open balcony on the platform, which has a timber balustrade.
The two right-hand bays are fully glazed from floor to transom, with a narrow band of glazing above that spans between paired joists in the center and single joists at the ends, topped with a continuous timber fascia. There is also a projecting timber-clad tank housing on the right side. The interior is largely open-plan and features timber boarded walls, floors, and soffits, maintaining a restrained aesthetic.
Sorrell House is recognized as a refined domestic building that exemplifies clarity and simplicity, showcasing the work of a distinguished and influential architect.
